Capen Park, located in Columbia, Missouri, spans an area of approximately 31.9 acres and is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled just south of the University of Missouri campus, the park offers visitors a blend of serenity and adventure. Its limestone bluffs have been a popular climbing destination in mid-Missouri for decades, drawing both novice and seasoned climbers. The rock formations, some reaching up to 50 feet, showcase over 40 climbing routes rated from beginner-friendly 5.6 to challenging 5.11c grades. These crags, surrounded by old-growth cedars and nestled along Hinkson Creek, combine natural beauty with adrenaline-filled opportunities.
Hikers can enjoy the park’s 0.5-mile nature trail, which also connects to the larger Hinkson Creek Trail and Grindstone Nature Area via pedestrian bridges. This integration into Columbia’s trail system makes Capen Park accessible for extended outdoor adventures. Visitors exploring the trails will find picturesque views, including scenic overlooks and diverse natural features such as native prairie grasses and limestone cliffs.
The park also features a city-operated mulch site where residents can drop off yard waste and obtain free mulch. Its amenities and proximity to downtown Columbia make it a popular spot for dog walkers, runners, and families. During the warmer months, the creeks running through the park become a hub for relaxation and recreation, with visitors cooling off in the waters.
Capen Park's history dates back to 1978, when James and Lucy Capen donated 10.75 acres to the city. Over the years, additional parcels of land were acquired, bringing the park to its current size. Today, it remains a vital green space for local residents and visitors alike, offering both a peaceful retreat and an active outdoor environment.
