About Washington Square Park in Kansas City
Washington Square Park is a 4.75-acre urban green space located in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Situated at the southern edge of the downtown area, the park is bordered by East Pershing Road to the north, Main Street to the east, and Grand Boulevard to the west. It sits in close proximity to several notable landmarks, including Union Station and Crown Center.
The park was officially established in 1921 when the Kansas City Park Board acquired the land. Its most prominent feature is a bronze equestrian statue of George Washington, which was dedicated on Armistice Day (November 11) in 1925. The statue, a copy of Henry Shrady's work in Brooklyn, New York, depicts Washington during the harsh winter at Valley Forge. It stands 16 feet tall atop a 13-foot granite pedestal, making it a focal point of the park.
Washington Square Park has undergone several transformations over the years. In recent times, it has been the subject of revitalization efforts aimed at making it a more active and engaging public space. The park offers views of the downtown Kansas City skyline and serves as a gathering place for various community events and activities.
Despite its urban setting, the park provides a green respite with grass areas, trees, and pathways. It has been used as a venue for festivals, concerts, and other public gatherings, contributing to the cultural life of downtown Kansas City.
