About Gillham Park in Kansas City
Gillham Park is a linear park located in midtown Kansas City, Missouri. Created between 1899 and 1902, it runs along Gillham Road from 22nd Street and McGee south to Brush Creek Boulevard. The park is named after Robert Gillham, who was considered "the father of Kansas City's cable railway system" and served on the Park Board until his sudden death in 1899 at the age of 44.
The park features a variety of recreational areas and open spaces. In 1911, tennis courts were added on the west side of Gillham Road at 39th Street. The park has undergone several developments and renovations over the years. In 1913, a casting and wading pool was added at 41st Street, which was later removed in 1976. A fountain honoring Robert Gillham and a new wading pool were installed at 41st and Gillham in 1977.
Gillham Park has historically been used for various seasonal activities. It was a popular spot for wintertime sledding and holiday celebrations. From 1946 to the 1960s, the park hosted an Epiphany Celebration where Christmas trees were burned on the "Twelfth Night." For several years until 1973, the park was home to the Mayor's Christmas Tree. Another popular event, Santa's Wonderland, was held in the park from December 1964 through 2019.
In recent years, Gillham Park has seen further improvements. A sprayground was added to replace the old wading pool, providing a modern water feature for families to enjoy during summer months. The park continues to serve as an important green space for the surrounding neighborhoods, offering opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and community gatherings.
