About Nature Center Park in Springfield
The Springfield Conservation Nature Center is an 80-acre natural area located within the city limits of Springfield, Missouri. Operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation, this nature center offers visitors a chance to explore and learn about the diverse ecosystems of the Ozarks region.
The nature center features nearly 3 miles of hiking trails that wind through various habitats including upland forests, bottomland forests, glades, and a portion along Lake Springfield. These trails provide opportunities for wildlife viewing, with over 170 species of animals known to inhabit the area. Visitors may spot white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species depending on the season.
At the heart of the property is a 22,000-square-foot visitor center building. Inside, guests can explore exhibits about local flora and fauna, including live animal displays featuring native reptiles and amphibians. The center also houses an auditorium where educational programs and workshops are regularly held on topics related to conservation and outdoor skills.
The nature center serves as an important educational resource for the community, offering programs for school groups, families, and individuals throughout the year. These may include guided hikes, wildlife viewing sessions, and hands-on activities designed to foster an appreciation for nature and promote conservation efforts.
While primarily focused on education and passive recreation, the Springfield Conservation Nature Center does not allow camping, hunting, or fishing on its grounds. The area is open daily to visitors, with the trails accessible from sunrise to sunset and the visitor center operating on a more limited schedule.
