About Gwen Giles Park in St Louis
Gwen B. Giles Park, located in St. Louis, Missouri, is a 5.35-acre urban park that serves the West End neighborhood. Originally established in 1959 as Catalpa Park, it was renamed in 1986 to honor Gwen B. Giles, the first African American woman to serve in the Missouri Senate and the first woman and first African American to be appointed St. Louis city assessor.
The park has undergone several changes over the years. In the past, it featured unique playground equipment, including a wooden fortress, cannons, and a concrete seal, which were popular attractions for children. However, these historic structures have since been removed.
Today, Gwen B. Giles Park provides open green space for the community, offering a place for relaxation and recreational activities. The park is situated near the intersection of the old Hodiamont Streetcar line's Right of Way and North Skinker Boulevard, making it easily accessible to local residents.
While the park has faced challenges in maintenance and upkeep over the years, it remains an important community asset. Its existence symbolizes the potential for urban green spaces and serves as a reminder of Gwen B. Giles' contributions to civil rights and public service in St. Louis.
