About Penrose Park in St Louis
Penrose Park is a 51.22-acre city park located in St. Louis, Missouri. Established in 1910, it is situated just south of Interstate 70 at Kingshighway Boulevard. The park is split into eastern and western sections by Kingshighway Boulevard NE, offering a diverse range of recreational facilities and natural spaces.
The western side of Penrose Park is primarily devoted to sports facilities. It features basketball courts, ball fields, and handball courts, along with a pavilion that provides shade and comfort for players. While the park includes tennis courts, they are currently in an unplayable condition.
One of the park's most unique features is its velodrome, a banked cycling track located in the southeastern section. Designed by Olympic cyclist and Schwinn bicycle designer Frank Burlando, the Penrose Park Velodrome was built in 1962 after the Forest Park Velodrome was dismantled to make room for Highway 40/64. The track measures 1/5 mile (now officially 322 meters) and features 28-degree banking. It is one of only 27 velodromes in the United States, making it a significant attraction for cycling enthusiasts.
The park has seen recent investments, including the addition of a jogging path with exercise equipment, new trees, and a pavilion with BBQ grills. There are also playgrounds and park benches, some of which have been donated by local supporters. The homes adjacent to the eastern edge of the park are described as classic St. Louis architecture in good to great condition, adding to the park's aesthetic appeal.
In 2019, the velodrome underwent significant renovations, including the installation of a new concrete surface. The track is open to the public during daylight hours in dry weather throughout the year, offering a unique venue for both training and racing.
