About Castle Rock Park in Billings
Castle Rock Park is a 25-acre community park located in the Billings Heights neighborhood of Billings, Montana. The park was established around 1970 when Ken Hollar donated the property to the City of Billings. It was named after the prominent sandstone formations known as castle rocks in the area.
Originally developed in 1982, the park has undergone several improvements over the years. In its early stages, playing fields, parking areas, and a playground were installed. Tennis courts were added in 1984, and accessible restrooms were funded by the Billings Heights Exchange Club in 1985. The following year saw the addition of a wading pool, irrigation system, and a stormwater retention pond.
In 2006, the wading pool was replaced with a more modern spray ground, enhancing the park's recreational offerings. The tennis courts were reconstructed in 2015, ensuring up-to-date facilities for visitors.
In 2020, a new master plan was developed with significant community input, envisioning future additions such as a community center, amphitheater, pump track, expanded playground, pickleball courts, and an enhanced spray ground. The Billings City Council approved this plan in January 2021, setting the stage for ongoing improvements.
Recent developments include the opening of a new playground in July 2023. This addition features a 33-foot tall wooden play structure, which is now the tallest in Billings, and a 90-foot zipline, adding exciting new elements to the park's recreational offerings.
Castle Rock Park serves as a versatile community space, offering a mix of active and passive recreation opportunities for residents of all ages. Its continued development and improvement reflect the community's commitment to providing quality outdoor spaces for its residents.
