About Roosevelt Park in Edison
Roosevelt Park is the oldest park in the Middlesex County Park System, dating back to 1917. Located in Edison, New Jersey, this 217-acre park serves as a green oasis in a highly developed area, often compared to New York City's Central Park on a smaller scale.
The park's centerpiece is an eight-acre lake, which is stocked for fishing by the State of New Jersey. Visitors can often be seen trying their luck at catching fish or simply enjoying the lake's beauty while walking, jogging, or biking around the paved pathway that encircles it.
Roosevelt Park is home to several notable features, including the Veterans Memorial, which won the 39th Annual New Jersey Concrete Awards. This monument honors county veterans of all wars and serves as a place for contemplation and remembrance. Another significant attraction is the fountain sculpture titled "Light Dispelling Darkness," created by sculptor Waylande "Kid" Gregory in 1936 as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) project.
The park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. It includes sports fields, picnic areas, playgrounds, and miles of trails for various activities. During the summer months, the park hosts outdoor theater festivals, including "Plays in the Park" and "Music in the Park," providing entertainment for the community.
Roosevelt Park also accommodates special needs visitors with "The Level Playing Fields," which are dedicated sports facilities for people with physical and other special needs. Additionally, the park is part of the East Coast Greenway, a 3,000-mile long system of trails connecting Maine and Florida.
Throughout the year, Roosevelt Park serves as a versatile space for both active recreation and quiet relaxation, making it a valuable resource for the residents of Edison and surrounding communities.
