About Morris Square Park in Jersey City
Morris Square Park is a public green space located in the Liberty Harbor North Redevelopment zone of Jersey City, New Jersey. The park showcases the rich industrial history of the Morris Canal while providing active and passive open space for the community.
Originally an empty lawn surrounded by dilapidated sidewalk and street trees, Morris Square Park was transformed into a 17,000 square foot public plaza and playground. The park features a new playground that intertwines fixed play equipment with rolling topography and a sliding hill, encouraging both prescribed programming and imaginative play.
As an artistic interpretation of the 107-mile historic Morris Canal route, a bold street graphic meanders along Grove Street and into the park, terminating at a monumental sign with information regarding the historical significance of the canal. The park's design incorporates flush curbs, decorative pavement, street trees, bollards, and informational displays.
Morris Square Park is designed to host year-round events and markets for the benefit of the community. It serves as a welcomed amenity, successfully integrating education, public art, and open space into one cohesive environment.
