About Sgt. Anthony Park in Jersey City
Sgt. Anthony Park is a small community park located on Palisade Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey. The park serves the local neighborhood and offers a variety of recreational facilities for residents to enjoy.
The park is named in honor of Joseph Anthony, a young man from the neighborhood who served as a tail gunner in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Anthony, who had been a promising baseball player in his youth, lost his life in 1944 during a mission in the South Pacific. The park was established and named after him on May 1, 1949, as a way to remember and celebrate his life and service.
Sgt. Anthony Park features several amenities for visitors, including a basketball court, a playground, and a dog run. The park also includes a community garden, which is open to members of the Sgt. Anthony Park Association and to the public when members are present. The garden contains a variety of plants, trees, and shrubs, and offers plots for growing vegetables.
The park is open from 8 am to dusk (10 pm) and is maintained by the local community. In recent years, there have been plans to update some of the park's facilities. As of 2018, both the playground equipment and the basketball court were due for renovation or replacement.
