About Riverbank Park in Newark
Riverbank Park is located in the Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey. Opened in 1910, it is the smallest park in the Essex County Park System at 10.77 acres, yet one of the most heavily used. The park sits along the Passaic River, offering waterfront access and views.
Designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm, Riverbank Park features a landscape typical of early 20th century urban parks. It includes curved pathways lined with trees, open grassy areas, and various recreational facilities. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, recognizing its historical and design significance.
Despite its relatively small size, Riverbank Park offers a wide range of recreational opportunities for local residents. The park includes sports facilities such as baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a running track. A synthetic turf soccer field was added in recent years, modernizing the park's amenities while maintaining its historical character.
The park also features a grandstand, providing seating for spectators at sporting events. For younger visitors, there is a playground area. A fieldhouse serves as a community center and provides restroom facilities for park users.
Riverbank Park has undergone several renovations and improvements over the years, including environmental remediation in the early 2000s. These efforts have helped to preserve the park's role as a vital green space and recreational area in the densely populated Ironbound neighborhood of Newark.
