About Jesse Allen Park in Newark
Jesse Allen Park is Newark's second-largest city-owned park, located in the Central Ward between Avon Avenue and Muhammad Ali Avenue. The park spans eight acres and serves more than 18,000 people who live within a half-mile radius, including students from the adjacent Louise A. Spencer Elementary School.
Originally opened in 1979, the park was named in honor of City Councilmember Jesse Allen, who was known for his commitment to building community. The park underwent extensive renovations over three phases, beginning in 2009 and concluding in 2022. These renovations were designed to transform the space into a modern, multi-functional recreational area that caters to diverse community needs.
The park's redevelopment was a collaborative effort involving local residents, community groups, and organizations such as The Trust for Public Land, the City of Newark, and corporate partners. The renovations aimed to create a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment that supports health, wellness, and environmental sustainability for Newark residents of all ages.
Jesse Allen Park now features a mix of active and passive recreational spaces, designed to accommodate various activities and promote community engagement. The park's layout includes both open green spaces for relaxation and structured areas for sports and play, making it a versatile community asset in the heart of Newark.
