About Barbour Park in Paterson

Barbour Park is a 1.4-acre pocket park located in Paterson's 4th ward, between Fair Street and Broadway. Once plagued by drug use and vandalism, the park has undergone a significant transformation thanks to community efforts and a recent renovation project.

The park's history includes a period when it was nicknamed "Syringe Central" due to prevalent drug activity. However, a dedicated group of local activists known as "Occupy Barbour Park" worked tirelessly to reclaim the space. They erected a fence, controlled access, cleaned up trash, and planted vegetation to make the park more welcoming for neighborhood families.

In 2021, Paterson's city officials, including Mayor Andre Sayegh and the City Council, along with the community group "Paterson Cares," initiated efforts to revitalize Barbour Park. The renovation project, costing $1.2 million, broke ground in April 2024 and was completed in September of the same year.

The redesigned Barbour Park now serves as a vibrant, family-friendly destination for local residents and students from the adjacent School No. 6. The park's transformation aims to foster a sense of safety and community belonging, turning what was once a troubled area into a community asset.
