Four H Park

4-H Park is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The park has a complex and sensitive history, as it contains the burial site for some students and staff who attended the Albuquerque Indian School (AIS) from 1882 to 1933. The eastern corner of the park is recognized as a known burial ground and final resting place for these individuals.

The Albuquerque Indian School was originally opened by the Presbyterian Church in 1881 to educate and assimilate Native children into white Anglo society. It was later transferred to federal control in 1884. The cemetery at the site was used from approximately 1882 to 1933.

In recent years, the City of Albuquerque has been working with community stakeholders, those who have a connection to the site, and Pueblo & Tribal Leaders to address this difficult and painful period of history for the Native American community. The city has installed fencing in the northeast area of the park to respect its sacred space and is continuing park design efforts in collaboration with Tribal and community partners.

The city's goal is to achieve special protection and recognition for the sacred site area, serving as a place of reverence, education, and healing. Ongoing efforts include tribal consultations, community meetings, and careful consideration of how to appropriately honor and memorialize those buried at the site.
