About Delaware Park in Buffalo

Delaware Park, located in Buffalo, New York, is the centerpiece of the city's park system designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Spanning 350 acres, it is often referred to as Buffalo's "Central Park" and was originally named simply "The Park" by Olmsted when it was created between 1868 and 1870.

The park is divided into two main areas: the 243-acre "Meadow Park" on the east side and the 133-acre "Water Park" on the west. The Water Park features Hoyt Lake, originally called Gala Water, which was formed by damming Scajaquada Creek. The Meadow Park consists of a vast open space that was historically maintained by grazing sheep.

Delaware Park has undergone significant changes since its inception. It was the site of the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, which led to the construction of several prominent buildings, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Buffalo History Museum. In 1962, the park was bisected by the construction of the Scajaquada Expressway, which has been a point of controversy and ongoing discussions about potential removal or modification.

The park serves multiple functions for the community. It provides spaces for both passive and active recreation, hosts cultural events, and is home to the Buffalo Zoo, which has been part of the park since 1875. The Marcy Casino, built for the 1901 exposition, remains a popular venue for events and gatherings.

In recent years, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy has taken over the maintenance and operation of Delaware Park, along with other parks in the Olmsted system. This has led to significant improvements in the park's condition and a renewed focus on preserving its historic design elements while adapting to modern recreational needs.

Delaware Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as part of the Olmsted parks and parkways system in Buffalo. It continues to be a central feature of the city's landscape and a testament to Olmsted's vision of providing accessible green spaces for urban residents.
