Unity Island Park

Unity Island Park is a 160-acre urban park located on Unity Island in Buffalo, New York. The island sits between the Niagara River and the Black Rock Canal, offering visitors scenic views of both waterways. Formerly known as Squaw Island, it was renamed Unity Island in 2015 to remove the offensive term from its title.

The park occupies the northern portion of Unity Island and provides a natural retreat within the city limits of Buffalo. It features winding recreational trails for pedestrians and bicyclists, which form part of the larger Riverwalk Trail system. These paths offer panoramic views of the Niagara River and surrounding landscape.

Unity Island Park serves as an important habitat for local wildlife, particularly birds. The island is situated within the Niagara River Corridor Important Bird Area, a major North American migratory bird pathway. To date, over 190 different bird species have been observed in the area, making it a popular spot for birdwatching enthusiasts.

The park's location on the waterfront makes it an ideal destination for fishing. Visitors can fish along the shores of both the Niagara River and the Black Rock Canal. The park also provides spaces for picnicking and general outdoor recreation.

Unity Island Park is connected to the mainland by a two-span swing bridge, allowing easy access for visitors. The park's natural setting and recreational offerings make it a valuable green space within Buffalo's urban environment.
