About Governors Island in New York
The Hills is a unique park located on Governors Island in New York Harbor. Opened to the public in 2016, this 10-acre park is part of a larger redevelopment project that transformed the former military base into a public recreational space.
Rising up to 70 feet above sea level, the Hills offer visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty, Lower Manhattan skyline, and New York Harbor. The park consists of four distinct hills: Grassy Hill, Slide Hill, Discovery Hill, and Outlook Hill.
Grassy Hill provides a gentle slope perfect for picnicking and relaxation. Slide Hill, as its name suggests, features four slides, including the longest slide in New York City at 57 feet long. Discovery Hill incorporates art installations, including a 36-foot-tall sculpture by British artist Rachel Whiteread. Outlook Hill, the tallest of the four, offers 360-degree views from its summit.
The Hills were constructed using recycled fill materials and designed to be resilient against rising sea levels and storm surges. The park incorporates over 41,000 new shrubs and more than 860 new trees, contributing to the island's diverse ecosystem.
