Ellison Park

Ellison Park is a 447-acre public park located in Rochester, New York. Established in 1926, it holds the distinction of being the first official Monroe County Park. The park features a diverse landscape, combining natural woodlands with steep slopes and the level flood plain of Irondequoit Creek.

The park's terrain offers visitors a variety of outdoor experiences. Its woodlands provide a serene environment for nature walks, while the creek adds a picturesque element to the landscape. The park's topography includes both steep areas and flat flood plains, creating a dynamic setting for various activities.

Ellison Park is known for its extensive trail system, with five blazed trails of varying difficulty levels. The park is also a popular spot for launching kayaks or canoes, allowing visitors to paddle downstream on Irondequoit Creek towards Irondequoit Bay.

Near North Landing Road, visitors can find a log blockhouse replica, marking the presumed site of Fort Schuyler, a 1721 colonial fur trading post. Historical markers throughout the park provide information about Indian Landing, a portage route used by the Haudenosaunee people to avoid the Genesee River's waterfalls.

The park serves as a year-round recreational destination. In winter, it becomes a prime spot for snow sports, featuring excellent sledding hills and an outdoor ice skating rink. During warmer months, visitors can enjoy various outdoor activities, including disc golf, tennis, and pickleball.

Ellison Park also caters to dog owners, hosting one of only two legal off-leash dog parks in the Monroe County Park system. This feature makes it a popular destination for pet owners looking for a safe space for their dogs to exercise and socialize.
