About Burnet Park in Syracuse
Burnet Park, located in Syracuse's historic Tipperary Hill neighborhood, is the largest park in the city, covering an impressive 88 acres. Established in 1886 through a donation by Major John P. Burnet, the park has been a treasured recreational space for over a century.
Situated at the city's highest point of elevation, Burnet Park offers visitors panoramic views of Syracuse. The park's diverse landscape includes open fields, wooded areas, and various recreational facilities, making it a versatile destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike.
One of the park's most notable features is its nine-hole par-3 golf course, which dates back to 1901 and is considered one of the oldest in the country. The first hole boasts a unique "shamrock" shaped bunker, said to be the only one of its kind in the United States.
Burnet Park is also home to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, which houses nearly 1,000 animals across 43 acres. While the zoo is now operated by Onondaga County Parks, it remains an integral part of the park's appeal and educational offerings.
Throughout the year, the park buzzes with activity. In the warmer months, visitors can enjoy the outdoor 50-meter swimming pool, play softball on one of the three fields, or utilize the tennis and basketball courts. During winter, the park's hilly terrain becomes a popular spot for sledding and other snow activities.
The park's Oak Grove area, an additional plot of land donated by Major Burnet in 1887, provides a serene picnic ground shaded by mature oak trees. This section of the park offers a tranquil retreat for those seeking a quiet moment in nature.
