About Lincoln Park in Syracuse
Lincoln Park is a 19.3-acre neighborhood park located in the northeast section of Syracuse, New York. Situated in the Lincoln Hill neighborhood, the park offers a blend of recreational facilities and natural areas for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The park's history dates back to the late 19th century when it was known as "Robinson's Woods" or "Williams Hill." In 1898, the City of Syracuse acquired the land, establishing it as a public park. Lincoln Park's landscape is characterized by its central drumlin, which provides elevated views of the surrounding Syracuse metropolitan area.
Lincoln Park's design reflects both the turn-of-the-century "Pleasure Ground" concept and the "Recreation Park" style popular in American urban planning during the early 20th century. Its period of significance spans from 1899 to around 1965, marking its establishment and subsequent developments.
The park features a mix of active and passive recreational spaces. A large wooded area occupies a significant portion of the park, offering a natural retreat within the urban environment. The park's terrain and layout make it suitable for various outdoor activities, from casual strolls to more active pursuits.
Lincoln Park has undergone several changes over the years, including updates to its facilities. The original pool and pagoda-style bathhouse were removed in the early 1970s, but the park continues to serve as an important community space for the Lincoln Hill neighborhood and the broader Syracuse community.
