About Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers

Tibbetts Brook Park is a 161-acre recreational area located in the Lincoln Park section of Yonkers, Westchester County, New York. Established in 1927, it was one of the first developed parks in Westchester County and has since become a cherished community space.

The park is named after Tibbetts Brook, which flows through the grounds and is itself named for George Tibbetts, a British settler who arrived in the area in 1668. The park's history includes a transformation from what was once partially a garbage dump and swampy area known as "The Jungle" into the lush green space it is today.

Tibbetts Brook Park offers a diverse range of natural features and recreational facilities. It encompasses woodlands, lakes, and open fields, providing visitors with a variety of landscapes to explore. The park serves as a refuge from urban living, offering a green oasis surrounded by the city.

One of the park's main attractions is its aquatic complex, which includes a large pool, water slides, and a "lazy river" for tubing. The complex also features a spray playground for children, in-pool basketball and volleyball areas, and lap lanes for swimming workouts. The classic Tudor-revival style bathhouse, which has been preserved, adds a touch of historical charm to the modern aquatic facilities.

Throughout the year, Tibbetts Brook Park hosts various events, including ethnic celebrations, fairs, and festivals, particularly during the summer months. The park's major activities lawn serves as a venue for these community gatherings.

For nature enthusiasts, the park offers walking trails that wind through wooded areas, providing opportunities for hiking, jogging, and wildlife observation. The lakes within the park are suitable for fishing and paddle boating, offering peaceful retreats for visitors.

Tibbetts Brook Park is accessible to Westchester County residents, with some facilities requiring a county park pass. The park is open year-round from 8 a.m. until dusk, allowing visitors to enjoy its amenities across all seasons.
