Van der Donck Park, located in downtown Yonkers, New York, is a prime example of urban renewal and environmental restoration. The park is centered around the daylighted Saw Mill River, which was previously buried beneath the city streets for decades. This innovative project, part of the larger Saw Mill River daylighting initiative, has transformed a former parking lot into a vibrant urban oasis.

The park's design incorporates both natural and urban elements, creating a unique space that serves as a gateway to revitalization in Yonkers. Visitors can observe the now-exposed river, which features fun pictures and photos depicting local wildlife along its banks. The river ecosystem supports various species, including carp, eels, and several bird species. One of the park's highlights is the presence of large blue fish, measuring 2-3 feet long, which can be seen swimming in the river.

Van der Donck Park offers educational opportunities through its "Open Classroom" arena and informative displays about the river's history and ecology. The park also features a "Sound Bridge," adding an interactive element to the visitor experience. Throughout the year, the park hosts various events and activities that draw both locals and tourists, including outdoor concerts, festivals, and fitness classes.

Named after Adriaen van der Donck, one of the first lawyers in the Dutch colony and a prominent leader in what was then known as New Amsterdam (now New York City), the park pays homage to the area's rich history. Its central location in Yonkers makes it easily accessible, with the renovated Yonkers train station situated across from the park.
