About Leigh Farm in Durham
Leigh Farm Park is an 82.8-acre historic property located in Durham, North Carolina. The park is anchored by a 7-acre historic core that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The centerpiece of the park is the Leigh House, a frame dwelling built around 1835. Surrounding the main house are several well-preserved 19th century outbuildings that offer a glimpse into life on a mid-sized plantation in antebellum North Carolina. These structures include an early 19th century dairy, a mid-19th century slave cabin with a notable stick-built chimney, a smokehouse, corn crib, well house, and carriage house.
In addition to the historic buildings, the property features wooded areas that were once open agricultural land. The park includes hiking trails that wind through the forested sections. An 18-hole disc golf course operated by the Durham-Orange Recreational Disc Association is also available for public use.
The Piedmont Wildlife Center conducts nature education programs and camps at Leigh Farm Park. Visitors can take guided tours of the historic structures on Saturdays from April through mid-December. The park aims to preserve an important piece of Durham's agricultural and social history while providing recreational opportunities for the community.
