Arsenal Park

Arsenal Park in Fayetteville, North Carolina is a historic site with significant Civil War connections. The park contains the remnants of the former North Carolina Arsenal, which was authorized by Congress in 1836 and constructed between 1838 and 1856. Initially part of the Federal government's Atlantic Coast defensive system, the arsenal primarily served as a storage facility upon completion.

When the Civil War began in 1861, local forces captured the arsenal and turned it over to the Confederate States of America. Renamed the Fayetteville Arsenal, it was expanded significantly and became a major supplier of arms and ammunition for Confederate troops. The facility produced rifles, carbine pistols, cartridges, swords, and bayonets, including the well-known Fayetteville Rifle.

In March 1865, Union forces under General William T. Sherman captured Fayetteville and destroyed the arsenal as part of their campaign. Today, Arsenal Park preserves the foundations of some of the original buildings, offering visitors a glimpse into this important piece of Civil War history. The park is adjacent to the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, which provides additional context and information about the arsenal's role in the conflict.
