About Tom Jones Commons in Cincinnati
Tom Jones Commons is a 3.5-acre park located within Eden Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. Opened in July 2021, it is situated south of Mirror Lake and along Martin Drive near the old reservoir. The park was developed as part of a 2007 master plan by Cincinnati Parks to transform the former lower reservoir area.
The commons features a wetland area with a boardwalk, allowing visitors to observe local wildlife and plant species. A paved walking loop connects various amenities throughout the park, providing accessible pathways for visitors to explore. The park also includes a natural play area designed for children ages 4-12, featuring elements like tall logs, short stumps, and rock boulders that create an obstacle course-like environment.
Tom Jones Commons serves as an important connector within Eden Park, linking the Walnut Hills and Mt. Adams neighborhoods as well as nearby cultural institutions such as Krohn Conservatory, Cincinnati Art Museum, and Playhouse in the Park. This connectivity advances Cincinnati Parks' goal of creating more pedestrian-friendly spaces.
The park's landscaping includes newly planted trees and shrubs carefully selected to support local wildlife. Species such as sugar maple, black gum, bur oak, redbud, and flowering dogwoods can be found throughout the commons. These plantings not only enhance the park's aesthetics but also provide habitat for various animals including squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and birds.
A welcome kiosk in the park provides historical information about Eden Park and the former reservoir, offering visitors context about the area's transformation over time. The commons is open from dawn to dusk, allowing community members to enjoy its features throughout the day.
