Wright Brothers Hill

The Wright Brothers Memorial in Dayton, Ohio is a significant historical site commemorating the achievements of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Located atop Wright Brothers Hill, the memorial overlooks Huffman Prairie Flying Field, where the Wright brothers conducted crucial tests and refinements of their flying machines from 1904 to 1905.

The centerpiece of the memorial is a 17-foot pink granite obelisk, dedicated on August 19, 1940, which would have been Orville Wright's 69th birthday. The memorial sits within a 27-acre designed landscape that pays tribute to Dayton's native sons and their contributions to aviation.

In addition to the monument, the site features several prehistoric Adena Native American mounds, adding an element of ancient history to the location. Visitors can walk up to these mounds and explore the area's rich cultural heritage.

The memorial park, now operated by the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, offers scenic views and a peaceful atmosphere for reflection. Benches and picnic tables are scattered throughout the grounds, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings while contemplating the Wright brothers' legacy.

Since 1978, the United States Air Force has held an annual ceremony at the memorial on December 17th to honor the anniversary of the Wright brothers' first flight. During this event, a high-ranking Air Force official gives a brief presentation, and a wreath is laid at the base of the memorial, followed by a ceremonial aircraft flyover.
