About Griffin Community Park in Norman

Griffin Community Park is a sprawling green space located in Norman, Oklahoma. The park spans approximately 110 acres, with about 83 acres currently developed for public use. This expansive area offers a diverse range of recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages.

The park has a unique history, having once been part of a 600-acre state mental institution established in 1891. The land was used for farming operations that produced food for the facility, including a dairy run by patients. While the farming operations ceased in the 1960s, remnants of this past remain, such as the old grain storage towers that stand as silent reminders of the land's former use.

Today, Griffin Community Park has been transformed into a multi-use recreational facility. One of its most prominent features is the extensive soccer complex, which includes 22 soccer fields. These fields are leased to the Norman Youth Soccer Association (NYSA) and host thousands of young players each season. The park's renovations were part of the NORMAN FORWARD initiative, a citizen-led proposal to improve quality of life projects throughout the city.

The park also features a disc golf course, providing enthusiasts with an opportunity to enjoy this growing sport. For those seeking a more relaxed outdoor experience, there is a lake within the park grounds, offering a picturesque setting for leisurely walks or peaceful contemplation.

Dog owners will appreciate the dedicated dog park area, allowing their pets to socialize and exercise off-leash in a safe environment. Additionally, the park includes a jogging and walking trail, encouraging visitors to maintain an active lifestyle while enjoying the natural surroundings.

Griffin Community Park is not just a space for organized sports and activities. It also offers areas for more casual recreation, including playground equipment for children and picnic facilities for families and groups to gather and enjoy outdoor meals.

The park's location adjacent to the George M. Sutton Urban Wildlife Park adds to its appeal, providing visitors with opportunities to observe local flora and fauna in a protected setting.
