About Overholser Park in Oklahoma City
Overholser Park is a scenic outdoor recreational area located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The park is centered around Lake Overholser, Oklahoma City's oldest reservoir, which was built in 1919 and covers approximately 1,500 surface acres. The lake has an average depth of 6 feet, with its deepest point reaching 13 feet.
The park offers a variety of activities for visitors, including fishing, boating, and picnicking. A covered fishing pier is situated on the southwest corner of the lake, providing anglers with a comfortable spot to cast their lines. The lake is annually stocked with channel catfish and hybrid striped bass, making it a popular fishing destination for local residents.
For boating enthusiasts, there are two boat ramps with tending docks: one on the east side of the lake near the patrol station and another at the south end by the dam. While swimming is prohibited in the lake, sailing and personal watercraft use are permitted.
The park features walking and jogging paths that encircle the lake, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy the natural surroundings and wildlife. The nearby Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge adds to the park's appeal for nature lovers and bird watchers.
Historically, the area where Overholser Park now stands was once covered by a thick grove of post oak and pin oak trees called Council Grove. This area was reserved for use by Fort Reno, which relied on the wood for various purposes.
Overholser Park provides a tranquil retreat for Oklahoma City residents and visitors alike, offering a blend of recreational activities and natural beauty within an urban setting.
