About Shevlin Park in Bend
Shevlin Park is a large natural area located on the western edge of Bend, Oregon. Spanning nearly 1,000 acres, the park was established in 1921 when the land was donated to the city by the Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company.
The park is characterized by its old-growth ponderosa pine forest and the presence of Tumalo Creek, which meanders through the park's length. This riparian corridor provides habitat for various wildlife species and offers visitors a serene natural environment.
Shevlin Park features an extensive network of trails suitable for hiking, running, and mountain biking. The main Loop Trail is approximately 6 miles long and follows the canyon rim, offering views of the surrounding landscape. Other trails include the Tumalo Creek Trail and a dedicated mountain bike trail.
The park is a popular destination for picnicking, with several designated areas equipped with tables. Aspen Hall, located within the park, serves as an event venue and is often used for weddings and other gatherings. A fishing pond near Aspen Hall provides recreational opportunities for younger visitors.
In winter, the park's trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, making it a year-round recreational resource for the community. The park's proximity to Bend, combined with its natural beauty and recreational offerings, has made it a beloved local landmark for over a century.
