About Mattie Reynolds Park in Eugene
Mattie Reynolds Park is a future neighborhood park located in southwest Eugene, Oregon. Named after the matriarch of one of Eugene's first Black families, the park is situated near the intersection of Dani Street and West 13th Avenue. The site spans approximately 5 acres and is currently an open field connected to the Amazon Channel.
The park's development is being funded through the 2018 Parks Bond, with construction expected to be completed in 2025. Its location is significant, as it is close to where the Reynolds family moved after being displaced in the 1940s for the construction of Ferry Street Bridge.
The City of Eugene has been engaging with the community, including Mattie Reynolds' daughters, to plan the park's features. The goal is to create a welcoming space that embodies Mattie Reynolds' values and promotes gathering, connecting, and building community. The park is intended to be visible, safe, clean, comfortable, and attractive, while also allowing visitors to enjoy and appreciate nature.
As part of the park's development, there are plans to include features that will make it a "Neighborhood Park Plus," acknowledging that the southwest region lacks many significant community-level park facilities. This designation means the park may incorporate some features typically found in larger community parks.
