About Trainsong City Park in Eugene
Trainsong Park is a 5-acre public park located in West Eugene, Oregon. The park is owned and operated by the City of Eugene and serves the Trainsong neighborhood. It is unique in that its name was chosen through a public contest, reflecting community involvement in its creation.
The park features a mix of recreational facilities and open spaces. It includes a ball field for sports activities and a children's playground for younger visitors. For skateboarding enthusiasts, there is a small skatepark where riders can practice their skills. The park also offers a basketball court for those interested in shooting hoops.
Trainsong Park has faced some environmental challenges in recent years. In 2021, soil sampling and testing led by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) identified elevated levels of dioxins in shallow soils within the park. As a result, portions of the park were temporarily closed to the public. In April 2022, some areas of the park were reopened after consultation with the DEQ, including the skatepark, basketball court, playground, and other paved areas.
In 2024, the City of Eugene was identified to receive $1.526 million in Brownfield Cleanup Grant funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the remediation of Trainsong Park. This funding is intended to replace much of the soil at the park and develop a public involvement plan for community engagement activities. The remediation work is estimated to begin in 2025, pending formal government agreements.
Despite these challenges, Trainsong Park continues to serve as an important community space for the residents of West Eugene, offering a variety of recreational opportunities in an urban setting.
