About South Park Blocks in Portland
The South Park Blocks form a unique linear park in downtown Portland, Oregon, stretching for 12 blocks from the Portland State University campus northward. Established in 1852, this historic greenspace serves as the cultural heart of the city and has been called Portland's "extended family room" by The Oregonian newspaper.
The park consists of a series of narrow blocks lined with mature trees, including elms, oaks, and maples. Wide central pathways run through each block, flanked by grassy areas, rose bushes, and park benches. The South Park Blocks host several prominent cultural institutions along its edges, including the Portland Art Museum, Oregon Historical Society, and Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
Throughout the park, visitors will find various statues and monuments of historical significance. These include a bronze equestrian statue of Theodore Roosevelt, a statue of Abraham Lincoln, and the Shemanski Fountain featuring a sculpture of Rebecca at the Well. The Simon Benson Memorial, honoring the timber baron and philanthropist, is located at the northern end.
The South Park Blocks play a vital role in Portland's community life. They are home to the popular Portland Farmers Market on Saturdays from March to December, attracting up to 14,000 visitors. The park also hosts various events and programs throughout the year, serving as a gathering space for residents and visitors alike.
In 2022, the South Park Blocks were listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing their cultural and historical importance to the city of Portland. The park continues to evolve, with recent master planning efforts aimed at preserving its character while enhancing accessibility and supporting community needs for years to come.
