About State Capitol State Park in Salem
State Capitol State Park is a unique urban park located in the heart of Salem, Oregon's capital city. Created in 2008, it encompasses the grounds surrounding the Oregon State Capitol building and adjacent areas. The park consists of three main sections: Willson Park to the west of the Capitol, Capitol Park to the east, and the Capitol Mall extending northward.
The park features beautifully landscaped grounds with a variety of native and ornamental trees, including cherry trees that bloom spectacularly in spring. Willson Park, which once served as the focal point for the entrance to the original Capitol building, was redesigned in 1965 and contains several notable features. The eastern section, known as East Park, extends from the Capitol to the Justice Department complex and retains aspects of its early landscape design, including historic trees and shrubs.
Throughout the park, visitors can find various monuments, memorials, and artistic installations that commemorate Oregon's history and heritage. The grounds include plaques set in the mall sidewalks listing the county seats and establishment dates for each of Oregon's counties. A circle of flags from every state in the union surrounds the Moon Tree, a Douglas fir grown from a seed that was carried to the moon on the Apollo 14 mission in 1971.
The park serves as a gathering place for the public, hosting numerous events and providing a space for people to share ideas and participate in civic activities. It offers a tranquil green space in the urban environment, allowing visitors to walk, reflect, and enjoy the outdoors while in close proximity to the seat of Oregon's government.
