About Race Street Pier in Philadelphia
Race Street Pier is a public park located along the Delaware River waterfront in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Opened in 2011, it was the first new public space of its kind on the Central Delaware River Waterfront as part of an ambitious redevelopment plan.
The pier's design pays homage to its original function as a bi-level shipping pier built in 1896. It features two distinct levels - an upper level with a grand sky promenade and a lower level for passive recreation and social gathering. The upper terrace, called the Grand Sky Promenade, rises 12 feet towards the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and is paved with Trex, a sustainable synthetic decking material made from reclaimed plastic and wood.
A multi-tiered seating area connects the upper and lower levels, providing ample space for visitors to relax and enjoy views of the river, bridge, and Philadelphia skyline. The lower terrace includes a multi-purpose lawn, planting beds, and additional seating areas. Nearly 200 LED solar light blocks are embedded in the paved walkway, allowing the park to be enjoyed both day and night.
The landscaping incorporates stormwater management features and adds greenery to the urban setting. Shade-tolerant grasses and perennials planted in steel planters increase plant diversity and provide seasonal visual interest. The park's perimeter railing leans at a 65-degree angle towards the pier, accentuating the ramp rising along the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
Race Street Pier serves as a tidal register, where visitors can check the forecast for high and low tides in Philadelphia. At high tide, the river comes within 4.5 feet of the lower level, offering a rare opportunity for visitors to get close to the water in an urban setting.
The pier is open year-round and hosts various activities throughout the year, including free daily yoga classes from April through November, as well as small gatherings and events. It has become a popular spot for picnics, wedding and engagement photo shoots, and general recreation.
