About Waterplace Park in Providence
Waterplace Park is an urban park situated along the Woonasquatucket River in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. Completed in 1994, the park occupies the original site of the Great Salt Cove, serving as a centerpiece of the city's revitalization efforts.
The park spans four acres and is connected to a 3/4-mile cobblestone-paved pedestrian walkway known as Riverwalk. Waterplace Park features a central pool and fountain, overlooked by a stepped amphitheater where outdoor performances take place during warmer months. Venice-inspired pedestrian bridges cross the river, adding to the park's picturesque atmosphere.
One of the park's most distinctive features is its position below street level, which creates a unique urban sanctuary away from automotive traffic. This design allows visitors to enjoy the waterfront and green spaces while still being in the heart of the city.
Waterplace Park is perhaps best known as the focal point for Providence's popular WaterFire events. These installations, created by artist Barnaby Evans, involve lighting bonfires on the river accompanied by music, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that draws thousands of visitors.
The park also serves as a hub for various cultural activities and festivals throughout the year. Its location near other significant city landmarks, including the Rhode Island State House, makes it an integral part of Providence's downtown landscape and a popular destination for both residents and tourists.
