About Charles Pinckney National Historic Site in Charleston

Pinckney Park is a 7.37-acre public green space located on Fort Johnson Road on James Island, Charleston, South Carolina. The park, acquired by the Town of James Island in 2015 using Charleston County Greenbelt Funds, offers visitors a serene natural setting with beautiful marsh and creek views.

The park is situated on a tributary of Parrot Point Creek and is surrounded by residential neighborhoods and other protected lands. It features majestic live oak trees that provide ample shade, creating a peaceful atmosphere for visitors. The property was once part of a larger tract owned by Simeon Pinckney, a former slave who purchased the land in 1874.

Pinckney Park has been developed in phases to provide recreational opportunities for the community. The first phase of construction, completed in 2017, included the installation of a playground and walking trails. In 2020, the second phase added a screened-in picnic shelter with attached restrooms, enhancing the park's amenities for visitors.

The park's design incorporates elements that respect its natural surroundings and historical significance. It serves as both a recreational space and a place of historical interest, offering visitors a chance to connect with nature and learn about the area's past.
