About Cannon Park in Charleston

Cannon Park is a 2.7-acre public green space located in peninsular Charleston, South Carolina. Situated at the intersection of Calhoun Street and Rutledge Avenue, the park is bounded by Bennett Street to the south and Ashley Avenue to the west. Its central location near the Medical University of South Carolina makes it one of Charleston's most visible parks.

Originally a sawmill pond in the early 1800s, the land was gradually acquired by the city, with the final parcels obtained in 1893. Park development began in 1894, though it initially fell into disuse. In 1899, a convention hall named Thomson Auditorium was built on the site to host a Confederate reunion. This building later served various purposes, including as a theater, temporary city hospital, and home to the Charleston Museum from 1907 to 1980.

In 1981, a fire destroyed the auditorium, leaving only its four grand columns standing. These columns have since become a focal point of the park, symbolizing its historical significance. Following the fire, the city proposed redeveloping the park based on earlier designs by the Olmsted Brothers landscaping firm, which had never been fully implemented.

Today, Cannon Park features a grassy area popular with dog owners, a small playground shaded by large live oak trees, and a sidewalk bordering the park suitable for walking or running. The park's layout includes palm trees and oaks surrounding the preserved columns, creating a blend of natural beauty and historical remnants.

While unfenced, the park allows dogs to be off-leash, making it a favored spot for local pet owners. Its central location and open space provide a welcome respite for urban dwellers and visitors alike, offering a place for recreation and relaxation in the heart of Charleston.
