About Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls
Sertoma Park is a sprawling 100-acre recreation area located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The park is situated in an old oxbow of the Big Sioux River, providing a scenic natural setting. Planning for the park began in 1986 as a joint effort between the Sioux Falls Sertoma Club and the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Department. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 25, 1989.
The park features extensive walking and biking trails that connect to the city's larger trail system. Multiple playgrounds cater to children of different age groups, offering a variety of play structures and equipment. A large central pavilion serves as a focal point for gatherings and events. The park also includes picnic areas with tables and grills, allowing visitors to enjoy meals in the outdoors.
Sertoma Park is home to several notable attractions. The Outdoor Campus, operated by the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department, offers educational programs on outdoor skills and conservation. The Butterfly House & Aquarium, located within the park, provides visitors with the opportunity to observe butterflies and marine life up close. Additionally, the park features a Japanese Garden, which was a gift from Sioux Falls' sister city, Potsdam, Germany.
The park's natural areas include ponds and wooded sections, providing habitats for various wildlife species. These areas, along with the maintained green spaces, offer visitors opportunities for nature observation and peaceful relaxation. Throughout the year, Sertoma Park hosts community events and serves as a popular destination for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and nature lovers in Sioux Falls.
