About Tuthill Park in Sioux Falls
Tuthill Park is a scenic urban park located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Situated on the south side of the city, the park's northern boundary is formed by the Big Sioux River. The park encompasses rolling hills and open spaces, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
The park's history dates back to 1915 when Arthur Tuthill and his wife Dot purchased the land, using it as their summer home until 1953. They then donated the first 40 acres to the city of Sioux Falls, with the park officially opening in 1956. This generous gift came with specific conditions, including the prohibition of alcohol consumption in the park and the preservation of Mrs. Tuthill's delphinium gardens.
Tuthill Park features diverse terrain, including both open areas and wooded sections. The park's elevated portions provide picturesque views of the surrounding landscape. Throughout the year, the park serves various recreational purposes. In winter, visitors can enjoy activities such as ice skating, sledding, and cross-country skiing. During warmer months, the park offers opportunities for hiking, walking, and disc golf on its 18-hole course (reduced to 15 holes in winter).
The park is also a popular venue for community events and gatherings. Its facilities are often used for weddings, picnics, and other social activities. The park's natural setting, combined with its recreational amenities, makes it a favored destination for both local residents and visitors to Sioux Falls.
