About Cal Young Park in Abilene
Cal Young Park is a public recreational area located in Abilene, Texas. Spanning 41.5 acres, this park offers a variety of outdoor activities and amenities for visitors of all ages. Originally known as Lytle Creek Park due to the creek that runs through it, the land was donated by West Texas Utilities Company in 1961. In 1971, the park was renamed to honor Cal Young, the former president of West Texas Utilities and a Parks Board member.
The park features open green spaces and well-maintained trails, making it an ideal spot for walking, jogging, and enjoying nature. Lytle Creek, which flows through the park, adds to its natural beauty and provides opportunities for fishing. The park's layout includes both open areas and more secluded spots, catering to different preferences for outdoor experiences.
Cal Young Park has evolved over the years with the addition of various facilities. In 1981, a Little League field and a park pavilion were added. Two softball fields were introduced in 1988, along with additional land donated by the Abilene slow pitch softball Association in 1989. A playground, funded by the parks voluntary contribution program, was installed in 1990, offering a safe and fun environment for children.
The park is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 12 a.m., providing ample time for visitors to enjoy its facilities. Its location in the heart of Abilene makes it easily accessible to residents and visitors alike. Whether for organized sports, casual recreation, or simply enjoying the outdoors, Cal Young Park serves as a valuable community resource in Abilene.
