About Scarborough Park in Abilene
Scarborough Park is a public recreational area located in Abilene, Texas. Originally established on May 28, 1956, the park was initially named Hartford Park due to its proximity to Hartford Drive. However, it was later renamed to honor Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Scarborough for their significant contributions to Abilene's parks system.
The park spans approximately 30 acres, offering a variety of outdoor amenities for visitors of all ages. It features both natural landscapes and developed recreational facilities, providing a balance between green spaces and active use areas.
In 2016, following a parks bond approval in 2015, Scarborough Park saw the addition of a modern aquatic feature. On August 18, 2016, a 3,000 square foot splash pad was unveiled, boasting 20 interactive spray features. This water playground is designed with sustainability in mind, recycling and recirculating 90 percent of its water.
The park's history is closely tied to community involvement. In its early years, Western Little League requested the construction of a baseball field, which was subsequently placed in the northeast corner of the park. This addition allowed the league to host games for children aged 8 to 12. Further enhancements to the park occurred in 1990 with the addition of a playground, followed by renovations in 2008.
Scarborough Park serves as a testament to the city's commitment to providing diverse recreational opportunities for its residents. Its development over the years reflects the changing needs and interests of the Abilene community, making it a valued public space for leisure and outdoor activities.
