About O.S. Gray Natural Area in Arlington
O.S. Gray Natural Area is a 20-acre park located in Arlington, Texas. The area was once a nursery founded by Oscar "O.S." Gray, who was considered one of the greatest pecan tree breeders and nursery operators in the Southwest.
The nursery, started in 1926, operated for more than five decades at this location. Today, the natural area serves as a living tribute to Gray's legacy, featuring many trees that were part of his original nursery.
Just west of the University of Texas at Arlington, O.S. Gray Natural Area offers visitors a chance to experience nature within an urban setting. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, squirrels, various bird species, and occasionally reptiles such as turtles.
The natural area features tree-lined hike and bike trails, allowing visitors to explore the diverse ecosystem. Additionally, the park includes pollinator gardens, which contribute to local biodiversity and provide educational opportunities for visitors.
In 2019, the garden within O.S. Gray Natural Area was adopted by the North Central Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) as a demonstration garden for Texas native plants. Volunteers from NPSOT help maintain and showcase the indigenous flora of the region.
