About Little Walnut Creek Greenbelt in Austin
Little Walnut Creek Greenbelt is a 206-acre undeveloped natural area located near the intersection of 51st Street and US-183 in East Austin, Texas. The greenbelt features hilly wooded terrain cut by creeks and ravines, providing a tranquil urban oasis.
Originally classified as a district park, Little Walnut Creek Greenbelt was reclassified as a greenbelt in 2017 due to its topography and steep slopes. The area contains over four miles of informal trails that wind through the property, offering opportunities for hiking, jogging, and nature exploration. However, the greenbelt currently lacks formal parking areas or major developed amenities.
In recent years, there has been a community-driven effort to increase awareness of the greenbelt and develop plans for future improvements. The Little Walnut Creek Greenbelt Master Plan initiative, completed in 2018, gathered public input to create a vision for enhancing the space while preserving its natural character.
The greenbelt serves as an important habitat for local wildlife and provides residents with a place to connect with nature close to home. Its proximity to residential areas gives it significant potential to become a valued recreational space for Austinites, offering a chance to experience the rugged beauty of the Texas Hill Country within the city limits.
