About Richard Moya Park in Austin
Richard Moya Park is a 92-acre recreational area located in eastern Travis County, approximately 20 minutes' drive from downtown Austin, Texas. The park, established in 1980, was originally named "The Precinct Four Park on Burleson Road" and was later renamed in 1986 to honor Richard Moya, the first Mexican-American elected to public office in Travis County, who served as a Travis County Commissioner from 1970 to 1986.
The park offers visitors the gentle topography typical of the Blackland Prairie. Large pecan and oak trees provide ample shade throughout the grassy picnic areas scattered across the park. The peaceful, wooded surroundings are bordered on the south by Onion Creek, creating an ideal environment for nature study, school outings, and bird watching.
One of the park's most notable features is the historic Moore's Crossing Bridge that spans Onion Creek. This bridge, constructed in 1922, incorporates three spans from the 1884 iron Congress Avenue Bridge that once crossed the Colorado River in downtown Austin. The bridge was closed to automobile traffic when the park opened in 1980 and has since been converted into a pedestrian bridge. It was registered as a Historic Landmark in 1980 by the Texas Historical Commission and underwent restoration in 1994.
The park boasts two miles of hike and bike trails that wind through large pecan groves, providing visitors with scenic routes for walking, jogging, or cycling. These wide, paved trails are accessible and well-maintained, making them suitable for visitors of all abilities.
Richard Moya Park is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and is a popular destination for picnics, outdoor gatherings, and recreational activities. The park's natural beauty, combined with its convenient location and easy accessibility, has made it one of the most frequented family gathering places in eastern Travis County.
Visitors should note that there is frequent air traffic in the area, which may affect the park's tranquility at times.
