About Red Bud Isle in Austin

Red Bud Isle is a 13-acre off-leash dog park located in Austin, Texas. Situated on Lady Bird Lake, just below the Tom Miller Dam, this peninsula offers a unique outdoor experience for both canines and their human companions.

The park features a short loop trail that encircles the island, providing scenic views of the surrounding water and wildlife. Visitors can enjoy the shaded paths lined with cypress and red bud trees, which are particularly beautiful in the spring when the red buds are in bloom.

Red Bud Isle's history is intertwined with Austin's past. The island was formed from granite blocks that washed downstream when the original Lake Austin dam broke in 1900. Over time, sediment and vegetation accumulated, creating the landmass that exists today.

While primarily known as a dog park, Red Bud Isle also serves as a popular spot for other outdoor activities. The western side of the island offers views of a sheer rock wall across the water, adding to the scenic appeal. Canoers and kayakers often launch from the shores, taking advantage of the easy water access.

It's important to note that the park can get crowded, especially during peak hours. Parking is limited, with only about 20 spaces available in the small lot. Visitors should also be aware of the presence of poison ivy in some areas and are advised to stick to the designated trails.
