Allen's Landing Memorial Park

Allen's Landing Park is a 1.76-acre urban park located in downtown Houston, Texas, at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou. Often described as "Houston's heart," this historic site marks the spot where the Allen brothers, Augustus and John, first landed in 1836 and established the city of Houston.

The park commemorates Houston's founding and served as the city's original port. In 1841, it was designated as Houston's official port, playing a crucial role in the city's early commercial development. Wharves were established, and the surrounding area grew into a bustling commercial center.

Over the years, Allen's Landing Park has undergone several transformations. In 1967, a small historical park was dedicated at the site, featuring a 4,000-square-foot parcel donated by the Southern Pacific Railroad. However, flooding in the 1970s led to its deterioration. In 1999, the park was revitalized under the guidance of landscape architect Kevin Shanley and SWA Group.

Today, Allen's Landing Park features grassy terraces that extend from street level to the bayou, providing visitors with a connection to the water. The park includes an entry plaza that frames significant views of the area. Arcing walkways lead to an embarcadero with bollards, benches, and concrete paving inscribed with text detailing the site's history.

As part of the larger Buffalo Bayou Park system, Allen's Landing Park serves as a reminder of Houston's origins while offering a space for recreation and reflection in the heart of the city. It provides access to hike and bike trails along Buffalo Bayou, connecting visitors to a broader network of green spaces in downtown Houston.
