About West Park in Irving
West Park is a public recreational area located in Irving, Texas. The park recently underwent renovations, with a new playground officially opening in April 2021. The playground was designed to be inclusive, catering to children of various ages, learning stages, and physical abilities.
The innovative playground features areas for children ages 2-5 as well as 5-12. One section includes musical elements such as a xylophone, drums, and an interactive music box, encouraging creative play. The park also incorporates a quiet corner, designed specifically for children with autism who may find certain areas overstimulating. This corner is sectioned off with plexiglass, allowing children to have a space separated from excessive sound and activity.
For children with mobility issues, the park has installed special swing seats that allow parents to safely secure their child. These seats are oversized to accommodate larger children and feature lap bars and safety straps. More adventurous visitors can enjoy amenities like a nearly three-story tube slide, merry-go-round, seesaw, and climbing net.
The playground now features over 1,800 square feet of shade coverage, with picnic tables situated around the area for parents and guardians to comfortably supervise children at play. West Park is also notable for being the first playground in Irving to use artificial turf as ground cover, which is considered easier to maintain than traditional playground landscaping.
The park's renovation was funded by approximately $350,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding, demonstrating the city's commitment to providing accessible and modern recreational spaces for its residents.
