About Wayne Ferguson Plaza in Lewisville
Wayne Ferguson Plaza is a 1.5-acre urban park and community gathering space located in the heart of Old Town Lewisville, Texas. Opened in 2015, the plaza was built on the site of a former parking lot and was designed to provide a central open space for the growing historic downtown area.
The plaza's design draws inspiration from the sculptural manner in which water carves the landscape of the North Texas tall grass prairie. A key feature is a linear water feature that runs parallel to a boardwalk, guiding visitors through a garden filled with swathes of native grasses and wildflowers. This water feature serves as both a cooling amenity and a gathering place surrounding the central stage and lawn terraces.
Wayne Ferguson Plaza incorporates elements of green infrastructure, including rain gardens on the south side of the lawn area. These rain gardens work to filter pollutants out of stormwater carried over streets and parking lots. The plaza also features a variety of native plants, which serve to support local pollinators and maintain the ecological character of the region.
The plaza connects Main Street commerce, City Hall, and the Lewisville Center for the Creative Arts, creating a cohesive green space with its own streetscape. It offers spaces for multi-generational activity and is designed to be flexible for both local events and tourism-based activities.
Wayne Ferguson Plaza serves as a venue for a wide range of community events, including concerts, performances, markets, and holiday celebrations. The plaza is open year-round and provides a space for outdoor dining, historic interpretation, and art displays.
