About Memorial Circle in Lubbock

Memorial Circle is a significant landmark located on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Dedicated in 1948, this circular green space serves as a tribute to Texas Tech students who fought and died in World War II. The area is not a traditional park, but rather a memorial space and central feature of the university grounds.

At the heart of Memorial Circle stands a bronze sculpture called "Riding into the Sunset," which depicts Will Rogers on his horse Soapsuds. This iconic statue, created by Electra Waggoner Biggs, faces southwest so that, according to campus lore, Rogers can be seen riding off into the sunset.

The circle is surrounded by a ring road and features landscaped areas with trees and flower beds. It serves as a gathering place for students and a focal point for various campus events and traditions. During graduation ceremonies, it's customary for new graduates to place flowers at the base of the Will Rogers statue.

Memorial Circle is also part of a larger tribute to military service members. In recent years, Texas Tech has undertaken enhancements to the area, including the addition of a Veterans Tribute Walk and a Wall of Honor, further cementing its role as a place of remembrance and respect for those who have served in the armed forces.
