About Main Plaza in New Braunfels
Main Plaza is a historic public square located in the heart of downtown New Braunfels, Texas. Established in 1845 during the city's founding, the plaza occupies a rectangular area at the intersection of Seguin Avenue and San Antonio Street. The space serves as a central gathering point for the community and reflects the German-Texan heritage of New Braunfels.
The plaza features an oval-shaped park in the center, surrounded by a two-lane traffic roundabout. At the core of the plaza stands a Victorian fountain, installed in 1895 to commemorate the city's 50th anniversary. This cast-iron fountain, created by J.L. Mott Iron Works of New York, has become an iconic symbol of New Braunfels.
Another prominent feature of Main Plaza is the bandstand, constructed in 1905. This neo-classical structure has hosted numerous musical performances throughout its history, including concerts by the local Fire Department Band. The bandstand received Texas Historic Landmark status in 2003, recognizing its cultural significance to the community.
Main Plaza has witnessed many important events in New Braunfels' history, from the first 4th of July celebration in 1846 to various festivals celebrating the city's German heritage. Today, the plaza continues to serve as a focal point for community gatherings, festivals, and cultural events, maintaining its role as the heart of New Braunfels.
